Westerners have a lot of misconceptions about Asia and Asians. We have seen too many Kung Fu movies and high achievers in our midst. We generally don't get the hicks and low-lifes which abound in Asia as in many other places.
And I say this as someone who is fascinated by Asia and would not mind living again in some parts thereof. But I did not wear rose-colored glasses like so many Kwei Lo whom I ran into during my stay amongst the Sons of the Yellow Emperor.

I suspect there are Chinese from rural areas who never had any sort of toilets and just went wherever it was handy. And perhaps elsewhere as well (Brunner's book was set in South America, and that particular incident involved poor peasants come to the city).

I traveled in much of China during the 1980s and 1990s. I saw big cities and small towns. In those days, one did not have to ask where a toilet was in a small town as the smell would lead one to it.
The outhouses I saw in the rural areas were so basic as to be merely a set of walls around an area which collected wastes which were channeled into the fields where grain and other food stuffs were grown. And these outhouses were fairly new, by the look of the bricks and concrete. I wonder what the farmers had used before that.

Well, I know night soil (i.e, human and animal wastes) has long been the main fertilizer for Oriental farms, so they obviously had some way of delivering it. I suspect the traditional means is more like how American farmers would handle manure from their farm animals.

Just a reminder that Singapore celebrates its National Day today. Singapore is having a pretty good run as large amounts of Hong Kong money are fleeing to Singapore. This will continue for some time.
