Nasa has something to say about the Whirlpool galaxy as well.

The Whirlpool Galaxy is a classic spiral galaxy. At only 30 million light years distant and fully 60 thousand light years across, M51, also known as NGC 5194, is one of the brightest and most picturesque galaxies on the sky.

It’s a particularly beautiful galaxy. It looks as if it is decorated for Christmas. And it looks a bit like the thing that Anthony Perkins was going to get sucked into.

But that blue eye in the middle -- I'm sure it's there, but I can't help suspecting a little work there. But who knows?
