It still worked for the photo.

That "Mystery Berries" photo is beautiful. The colors are wonderfully balanced and jump out at you. The picture rings some bells, but I can't recall exactly what it reminds me of.

Mr. Kung, I did a little research. Here’s A Quick and Juicy Guide to Berries of the Northwest. They look line baneberries (never heard of them). If it is, they are poisonous. The article says that the Indians use to use the juice to coat their arrowheads. And I clearly instinctively knew not to eat them. In fact, it was many years until I learned that the berries of the Oregon Grape and berries of Salal were okay to eat (if not always particularly palatable). I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any black raspberries growing wild. Thimbleberries are an interesting treat. There’s not a lot of bulk to them for they are sort of shaped and thin like a thimble when you pluck them off the stem. But it's an interesting and subtle flavor. I’m not sure I’ve seen any nightshade but I’ll be on the lookout for it.
Here's more info on trees that produce red berries.

I am not sure what they are, but the leaves in your original photo seem to be different from those of baneberries, which are displayed at Wikipedia.

Should I go back there and eat a handful with 911 on speed dial?

Well, I didn't see anything red in any of the photos.
If I were going to eat some berries of uncertain toxicity, I would bring a few home to sample them where I could receive speedier hospital care.

So what's the minimum nibble a guy could do on those berries? Sort of just tasting a mushroom to see of your lips go numb. I'll pick a couple next time I'm out there and bring them in for further analysis.

Okay, you had to go almost to the bottom. Previously I'd given up after 3 or 4 photos.

For one thing, I'd want to know how dangerous the possible toxin can be. Would one berry potentially be fatal? Or would it merely be unpleasant for a few hours? It's a matter of risk vs. reward.
