This is the first piece by Dreher that I completely agree with. Hungary is for freedom I have visited Hungary only two or three times. The last time was over thirty years ago. But I have followed the country for a number of reasons. First, the woman who led my college program in Vienna was Hungarian and her brother taught German in Texas. They were both good to me. Second, Hungary was part of the old Hapsburg Empire and having studied in Vienna, I have read a good deal about the country. It is an interesting place. The language in not Indo-European and the people are from the Asia Steppes. Budapest is beautiful. That photo of Tucker and Orban appears to have been taken at the Fisherman's Bastion. If I were to leave the USA, Hungary would probably be in the top three places on my list.

Hungary has some incredible architecture. And the bonus is that you’re only a stone’s throw from Transylvania in Romania. It would be fun to visit there. There must be lots of Dracula tours and tourist traps, etc. Or is Romania more of a shit-hole country these days?
Interesting to see that David Frum is still an asshole. Hungary might indeed be a great place to visit or live. Sign me up for you bug-out Space Ark when the time comes.

Budapest is one of the "so-called" Hapsburg cities. Vienna, Budapest and Prague. I lived in Vienna and have visited both Budapest and Prague. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go to the old part of Prague with it's famous Karl's Bridge. While Vienna is beautiful, Budapest is something special with the Danube flowing between Buda and Pest. The architecture is, indeed, incredible. The Parliament is something else. A big advantage Hungary has for me is that it borders Austria. I still have friends there. Hard to believe it has been almost 50 years since we met. If we get enough people to "Bug-out" we can start our own monastery, make wine or beer. Maybe we'll get involved with scientific work like Mendel.

Wow. What a parliament building. Do I understand correctly that it you say “Parliament” with a capital “P” you’re denoting the one in London? But what a Gothic masterpiece. It looks as if the building is in the first stage of dematerializing on its way toward Heaven. I was trying to find an example of the typically drab-grey cement architecture of the Soviet era in order to contrast it with that Hungarian parliament. Examples abound, if only in your mind. But I ran across this page: The Raw Charm of Brutalist Architecture Around the World. Some charm, here and there, but raw indeed. Many of the concrete tenement or project buildings built in New York have that oppressive Soviet look to them.

Some very ugly architecture there. I suspect many of these "masterpieces" will be demolished well before their time. Unfortunately, such concrete structures are not always easy to bring down. If you want to see some real Brutalist architecture, click on the link.

Oooo. Nothing like those Nazi flak towers. I guess the ones in Berlin were particularly yuge. Are there any remnants of those remaining?
When I read a book about the U-boats, I came to understand just how much concrete the Nazis poured. It would be difficult to comprehend. Probably one of those analogies where you say you could pave a 4-lane highway to the moon, or something like that.
Those flak towers in Vienna are amazing in their own way. I had no idea that they existed. It looks like one of them they tried to modernize with a glass structure added on.
I’ll read that whole article later. But just the pictures are amazing.

Yes, they are still there. These things are too massive to bring down without damaging a lot of the surrounding area. I recall a story I heard in Vienna back in 1973-74 that the authorities tried to demolish one of the towers, but only succeeded in demolishing some surrounding buildings instead. They decided to leave the towers standing after that. I can't remember where I read it, but apparently the recoil from the flak guns was so fierce that it would cause the concrete beneath it to spall. As a result, the Germans started putting railway ties beneath or around the guns mounted on the tower. This to absorb the recoil. The towers could take direct hits from bombs and artillery without falling apart. They were used as bomb shelters as thousand of people could be squeezed in at any given time.

That one photo of Vienna on the Wiki page shows just how yuge those things are. And with other buildings tucked in around them, I can definitely understand the difficulty of trying to dismantle them without destroying a good city block in diameter around them.

This is an excellent video of Tucker Carlson giving a speech in Hungary. Dennis Prager is apparently in the audience. Carlson says what most in the media will not say.

Once again, Orban is calling a spade a spade. Killing the family the best part of the piece.

Victor Orban, the bane of EU and globalist bloodsuckers, has won a fourth straight term in office. Contrary to what the lying press was reporting before the election (they were predicting a close race) it appears he and his party might be returned to government with a larger percentage of the vote than they received in the last election. If the West had three or four more like Orban, perhaps we wouldn't be circling the toilet the way we are presently. Orban wins again

Orban may the best thing to happen in Hungary since Brahms Hungarian Dances. amgreatness.com/2022/04/04/what-the-american-right-can-learn-from-orbans-big-win/Essentially, what Orbán has accomplished is a restoration of balance to Hungarian cultural and intellectual institutions. For a Left that is used to unchallenged domination of those commanding heights, any competition or balance feels like disinheritance.

Interesting how some conservatives are trying to morph it into a left wing thing to oppose Russian aggression.

There are plenty of left-wingers who oppose Russian aggression, but there would appear to be an equal number of right-wingers who oppose it. Personally, I don't think political affiliation can be determined by one's views on this.

A brilliant speech by Orban which lays out today's challenges, how we got here and what must be done to keep our culture. It is longish, but I urge everyone to read it. Although much of what he is talking about relates to the world's interactions with Hungary, he also goes into areas which are common to the rest of the West. It is a shame we don't have such a leader in the USA. Orban Speech

A very interesting and enlightening 30-minute interview of Viktor Orban by Tucker Carlson. Orban covers some history of the relations between Russian and Hungary, Ukraine and Russia and America's role in the present international situation. Having studied in Vienna, visited Hungary several times and been very close to a number of Hungarians for over 30 years i.e. until their deaths from old age, I know something about the area and its history. What Orban is saying is correct. Viktor Orban
