The smell was so intense, not dissimilar to burning tires, he thought the house was on fire and following what he learned in school was crawling along the floor to the front door.
As I said, I've encountered skunks only from afar as road kill. But the smell of burning tires was unmistakable.
Any odor, if prolonged and intense, is often repugnant. Think about those women or men who wear too much perfume or cologne. Honest to god, I've had people (usually women) in my office for less than two minutes and the smell of their perfume has persisted for hours. I've often had to open the door to the outside and air the place out.
All this is a way of saying: Let us remember that dogs aren't generally known for finding smells distasteful. One of the first things our English Springer Spaniel would do after a bath was find something dead (if possible) to roll in.
Dogs are not fussy. So it says something they even they can be repelled by a skunk's spray. This link has some info:
Skunk spray is an oily substance made up of seven volatile components. Although the composition and strength of spray varies among skunk species, the main component in skunk spray is sulfur, which is responsible for the strong odor. Skunk spray is stored in anal glands hidden in the rectum. Both males and females have the glands and are able to produce spray.
Normally things "hidden in the rectum" is a pretty good sign you don't want any of it on you. There is also a good possibility that skunks are Democrats.
