The History Channel has a series of series. One of them is The Food That Built America. They also have a very interesting series called The Toys That Built America. One episode features McDonald's. And the initial idea behind it was to get people good food, fast. To do so, the McDonald's brothers trimmed their menu down to the essentials (burgers, fries, shakes, etc.) and then did a more or less scientific assessment on how to best build a kitchen for speed. They were an almost instant success. In those days, drive-in restaurants were all the rage. But it was actually a slow way to get your food. They weren't sure if anyone would actually want to get out of their cars and get their food faster. But they did. Now this amazing concept has been turned on its head. We are getting mediocre, over-priced food at a snail's pace. And I don't just mean McDonald's. That's pretty much the case everywhere that I know of. I can't think of a fast-food place the brings forth nostalgia of "the way things used to be." Maybe the in-restaurant experience of Arby's is the closest I can think of at the moment. Wendy's? Good god, no.

I may have mentioned the following points sometime back, but I will risk repeating myself.
Whataburger served decent food at reasonable prices. They had specials throughout the year with things like the A1 Burger. I believe the company was founded in the 1950s, and was still family owned until several years ago. The moment they sold to some investment company the quality of the product dropped precipitously. We were not frequent customers, but about a year after the company changed hands, we went to have dinner and found the quality was lousy. We have not been back since.
In my opinion, Braum's is the best "fast food" restaurant in our area. Their present special, "a burger with two quarter pound patties, Monterrey Jack cheese and jalapenos" with fries and small milk shake for $8.69" is a great deal for today. Not only that, the quality is still good. Even Mdm. Flu approves of it. Of course, the company is still family owned and they have their own farms for dairy and meat.

That does sound like a great deal. I wish there was something like that around here.
