This editorial shows the problem with the progressive media. Their solution to cartel violence is 1. Blame the victim and 2. "can't we all just get along" and have a civil society.

Can anyone imagine that Theadore Roosevelt would just shrug his shoulders when Americans are murdered, especially women and children? I can't. This calls for an aggressive American response with lots of scary stuff, special forces, tanks, and artillery. Trump should offer an ultimatum to Mexico, either you clean it up or I will, but the cartels need to be destroyed before there is any opportunity for a civil society in Northern Mexico.

The Dallas Morning News became a progressive rag 15-20 years back. I stopped subscribing to it around that time. The final straw for me was its constant promotion of the queer agenda.

The article re Mexico was silly and dishonest. It blames the violence in Mexico (at least partially) on Trump's policies and calls for changes which amount to allowing in more immigrants from Latin America.

For the rest, it says very little of use. More broad-brush pablum.

I don't totally agree with either one. Drug decriminalization/legalization will indeed lead to increased use, but the current practice leads to massive corruption. We saw something similar with prohibition, which led to massive corruption but did reduce drinking. But the Federalist article is definitely right that something needs to be done to fight the cartels, which are creating a narcocracy through much of Mexico -- at the best, without serious objection by the government.

As for the Dallas Morning News, they basically provide a collection of idiocy. They aren't totally wrong, int that Mexico does need to develop the institutions of civil society. They're just unwilling to see that while Mexico must create its own civil institutions, the first step must be destroying the cartels. That will not be done with hugs, and it won't be done with wishing. It will require violence, and by now even police work probably won't do the job. It will take military action, treating the cartels as a rebellion. Tactical bombing of their manors (preferably when their leadership can be wiped out with them) would be a good start

Of course, with Obrador, is it really a rebellion against the top?

Good article by Maitra. I wonder how much modernized Catholicism (aka “Marxism with a cross”) has led to such moral namby-pambyism.

Nor are most Republicans vocal about this, when they would be the first to cry intervention had this happened somewhere between Algeria and Afghanistan.
