Well, that doesn't look like the weed you showed earlier. I recall the leaves on that one, and they're very different.

If you speak really slowly and explain how to do that, I'll give it a try!

No it's not.
I'm not trying to be contrary, or even have an argument. Your latest weed photo is Plantain, and while Plantain is edible (aren't you glad to hear that), it is not Purslane. Maybe you can take a picture of the plant I gave you. Last time I saw it, it appeared to be very photogenic.

Maybe, in the distance beyond the length of my short memory, I did show you Plantain in some parking lot or crack in the sidewalk. All this time, I thought we were still talking about Purslane. I'm rather dense, but that's part of my charm. And I'm humble.
Speaking of salad, this Purslane is so good, it could be tossed with some Plantain and wild strawberries, topped with some Ice Plant flowers and served with a drizzle of Stinging Nettle Balsamic dressing for a nutritious and flavor packed treat. Maybe I should open a restaurant, and call it "Weeds and Seeds".

I’m not talking about purslane. I’m talking about an edible weed you once pointed out to me.

Exactly. That's why I posted a different photo. We call that "Two different things." Gibbnonymous got it into her head that I was talking about purslane. I looked back at the paragraph where I mentioned another weed she told me was edible and I couldn't find the ambiguity that set her off on her magical mystery purslane tour. Having nibbled at a few leaves of what she points out is plantain (thank you), there have been no ill effects. In fact, one web site notes: There's nothing like making a great smoothie from a puss-sucker.

I will shortly post instructions for adding an avatar in the "Site News and Feedback" forum. But I would be disappointed if you all didn't first take a shot at it yourself. Hint: It's hidden at the top of the screen under the menu item of "Profile."
Oops. I was wrong. I had already created those instructions. So I guess you all just didn't bother to look. But I will point you to them and let me know if you have any problems or question: Avatars.

I'm shattered! Up until now, I blamed all my communication problems on my husband.
Truth is, though, I've done alot of livin' since we started this discussion yesterday morning. I had to go back and re-read to find where I went off the rails. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
To make it up to you, I'm sending you free tickets and a backstage pass to my next concert at The Gardens: Crack In The Sidewalk's Magical Mystery Purslane Tour.

A deal. And I expect further ideas on things you can eat that are good for you that you never would have thought of.
And I really would like to make a salad of the plantain when I can find a batch with tender leaves. And I'll absolutely guarantee you that if I set aside a patch of ground just to grow these weeds, probably they wouldn't grow. Murphy's Law. But I would get everything but that weed.

It would be a fun experiment to collect some plantain seeds and grow a fresh supply of leaves.

Just to be clear, these are the plantains that are mini-bananas you can buy in stores. I've had bananas often enough, but not plantains as far as I recall. I definitely don't recall ever eating the foliage of either. But who knows what's included when you get generic "greens"?

I don't believe anyone was mistaking those small weed-like green leafy things with bananas. But you never know. If anyone is searching around their lawn for a type of banana, I doubt they're going to find it. But I always wondered what do to do with a plantain banana. I've never had one. A quick Google basically says that its a type of banana used for cooking. Wiki states: Aha. Then what, may we ask, is a true plantain? Well, that certainly cleared things up . . . not.

Timothy, I abbreviated the name of the plant. It is Ribwort Plantain. And you are correct, there is a banana type fruit called Plantain. Trader Joe's (my main source of all things snacky) has salted plantain chips. For me, they are a great alternative to potato chips.

Oh....and I think we've found the lead singer's name to Gibbnonymous' band: Mr. (or Mrs.?) Ribwort Plantain.

Oooh, nice. Do they ever become prime Ribs? I realize that only Alfred Packer or Hannibal Lecter would be interested in learning if they're ever barbecued Ribs.

Purslane Update: We served purslane stir-fry last night. I harvested a bowl of fresh purslane from our private reserve, and my friend CTC chopped it into one-inch lengths. She stir-fried it in coconut oil with salt, pepper, and coconut aminos (a sweet version on non-soy soy sauce). Mr. Gibblet (The BBQ King) cooked the chicken breast to perfection, and CTC had picked up a steaming batch of shrimp fried brown rice with veggies from our favorite local Teriyaki place. I plated mine with a bed of the fried rice scattered with bite sized chicken pieces, topped it with a generous portion of the purslane, then drizzled some of the not-soy sauce over the top. It was a taste sensation!

From what I've heard (from an SF fan who used to -- and probably still does -- do interesting events on strange items in the scientific literature, even actual soy sauce isn't always actual soy. You probably don't want to know what it might be, though I think this may be a problem mainly for Chinese-made soy sauce.

I visited Gibbnonymous Acres today and was given some nice plants to spruce up my place (but no spruces but I have my eye on a cedrus deodara). I received a couple rosemary starts (based on the principle that you can never have too much rosemary), a maple tree of some kind, another shrub (I forget the name), and finally, a bonus plant — a small fig. I also received some honest to goodness Purslane Seeds. One could say that Gibbnonymous Acres is a very seedy place. The seeds are black and very small. The plant Gibbnonymous gave me last year up and died right in the middle of summer. I never got a chance to harvest from it. It seemed to be growing well, if slow. And then it just could not go on. I refreshed the soil, added a little fertilizer, and sowed the seeds per Gibbnonymous’ precise instructions. (So basically it’s her fault if they don’t sprout.) Next, I need to remind her that I’d like to get some seeds from her kale plants. You really should see them. I was so enraptured (both by their pretty yellow flowers and the taste of the seed heads) that I forget to take a photo. Maybe Gibbnonymous can email me something and I’ll post it here.

Brad, it was great seeing you and your brother here at the Big G Nursery and Edible Garden. Just for future reference, the little tree is a Vine Maple, and the shrub is Wine & Roses Weigela. The fig is Desert King. The mother plant to the herb is rosemary, which means you have Rosemary's baby.
The purslane seeds look like watermelon seeds due to the enlargement in the photo, but each are actually the size of a grain of sand. By the way, I stand behind every product I give away, and offer a money back guarantee if you are not completely satisfied! Replacements will be issued for a small handling fee. Exchanges are temporarily suspended due to the affects we are finally realizing from the extinction of the dinosaurs and unicorns.
