Mission Statement: We shall go forth and find interesting things to eat that probably won't kill us, including the lovely little vegetable-plant (high in calcium for Mr. Kung) called "Purslane."

This reminds me of iceplant, which we found in lawns when we lived in the Monterey Presidio (where my father attended the Army Language School to learn Greek in preparation for his term as Assistant Army Attache to Greece). It was reported to be poisonously inedible.
Well, I tried using an acute accent for the last letter in attache, and it didn't work. Does anyone know how to do that?

Attaché. On my Mac, I hit Option+e. That's it. On Windows it's obviously different. From Googling on the web, one solution (that works in Word) is to hit Control and the tilda key (`), release this key combo and quickly type the letter you want to appear with an accent mark over it. Whether this works in whatever word processing program you're using (or the post editing box here), I don't know. When in doubt, Google for a solution. That's all I did. It can be done by anyone. Hope this helps.

Yes indeed, Timothy, Ice Plant is a succulent with an appearance very similar to Purslane. It has edible fruits (who knew!), and the leaves are edible as well. I havent tried it yet, because I don't have it in my garden.
As a rule, I dont use weed killer. However, rules are made to be broken and I'll make an exception for the persistent Quaking Aspen suckers coming up from those trees we cut down this winter. Otherwise, I feel confident eating the weeds in my own yard. Sometimes I eat the fresh dandelion flowers and leaves, not so much because I'm hungry, but for whatever vitamins and minerals they have which I may not be getting in my regular food.
I know of a few other wild edible plants which grow around here. I'm not sure I want to venture beyond my own yard to forage for them, though. I really try to keep things simple. Yet, increasing my knowledge of what is edible vs poisonous could be important in a variety of scenarios. In the meantime, I will continue to cultivate edible plants around the yard.
We planted a Honeycrisp Apple Tree and Frost Peach Tree this spring. We have some Fig Trees, which are loaded this year. The purpetual tomato patch is starting to flower, now. And the organic potatoes I bought at Trader Joe's three years ago (and stuck in the ground after we waited to long to eat them) are still multiplying in the potato plot. And, of course, there are pumpkin plants coming up everywhere -thanks to the squirrels!

That's also not a bad name for a band, as Dave Berry would say. Or maybe that would be better for an album title. I've grown Ice plants for the last two years (but none this year). They take a little time to take off, but once they do you get a splendid (although somewhat short-lived) plethora of flowers (which is also the name of the first track on the album). I had no idea you could eat the fruits (never seen those) or leaves. This is sort of a "you first" situation. The ice plants I've grown (if memory serves) did not look like a succulent. So I wonder if I had some other type of ice plant or what. But the flowers looked just like that. I just don't remember them having a succulent-like body of leaves.

I don't recall ever seeing either fruits or flowers on the ice plants we had in our area. We were warned against eating them, or at least the leaves. (One such plant we did like was sour grass, but it was relatively rare.)

Wouldn't those Ice Plant flowers be pretty on top of a salad?

"Gibblet and the Ice Plants" will be performing their newly sprouted album "Plethora Of Flowers" tonight at The Gardens. Next week at The Gardens, heavy metal band "Quaking Aspen Suckers" will debut their newest album "I'm Still Here, Volume 16".

Where I grew up there was a good 20 acres or woods behind our house. There was even more across the street. We spent a lot of time there. But the only things I learned that I could safely eat are huckleberries (the red kind), blackberries (the wild small ones or the larger ones), or salmonberries. (Salmonberries should be reaching their peak ripeness if they haven't already crossed over.) Any other berry we were told not to stick in our mouth because they may be poisonous. That's not bad advice to give a stupid kid. But I have since learned there are other things you can eat such as: + Oregon Grapes+ Salal+ And I recently read that you can eat the berries of the madrona tree (this is a "you first" situation) and that the berries are good for cider and that tea can be brewed from the leaves. If you've ever seen a madrona leaf, you'll wonder if it's made out of plastic rather than cellulose. But apparently it's not poisonous. (I may try it and report back. If I don't report back, you'll still have a result.) + Huckleberries (the blue kind) Gibbnonymouse has noted that dandelions (flowers and stems) are edible. She has also taught me that a certain type of weed (it grows all over the garden) is edible. I've tried it with no ill results and can report that they taste very good. The weed in question may have been this one.

There are lots of edibles. I recall that stinging nettles are edible How good they are I don't know, and of course just because some parts of plants are edible doesn't mean all parts are. (Certain parts of the rhubarb plant have poisonous levels of oxalic acid, for example.) Dandelions I knew about, and I think it was Ray Bradbury who wrote "Dandelion Wine". But is that the flower or the stem? And what about the seed pod? (We had lots of dandelions in our yard, and more and more of them through the year.)

How quickly they forget (sigh), or maybe you've been sampling some vegetation. The weed in my garden that you liked so much is.....(drumroll, please)....purslane, our Society's namesake for crying out loud. I actually saw pots of it for sale at a grocery store yesterday!
The weed in your photo (not the nettle photo) appears to be dandelion.
Eat some beef.

Yeah, that probably was a dandelion. I’ll snap a photo with my own camera. And still waiting for my Puslane to grow enough to start sampling it.
Also, do as you like. But you can also quote with the quote tags like this:
The code looks like this:
[quote]To be or not to be, that is the apartment number.[/quote]

Or…duh…choose the quote icon (third from the right on the bottom) in the Create Post box and paste something in. I just noticed that. Mea culpa (double dog dare anyone to make a limerick from that).
After a rather vigorous hike on Green Mountain yesterday, I ate some potato salad bought from a deli. Talk about living dangerously. But that was my craving.
And I had four eggs (scrambled) for breakfast. A protein craving, for sure. I like beef as well.

There are so many types of potato salad. We often used to have a form based on mashing rather than chopping up the potatoes, and including some sweet pickle. Naturally I liked that best. There's also German potato salad, which apparently really is from Germany (indeed, potato salad in general originated there), unlike German chocolate cake. The latter was originally German's chocolate cake after the original chef who created it. (Black Forest cake/tort, on the other hand, really originated there.) I believe the standard you would generally get in a deli around here would be based on chopped potatoes and use what I believe is mustard (and not Dijon mustard such as Grey Poupon, which is named after the two inventors).

I'm learning things all the time, Gibbnonymous. And another big "Duh!" I was copying the text from a post and then entering the Create Post box and clicking the little quote icon and then pasting in the text. Well....duh again...you can just select the text and then hit the quote icon in the Quick Reply box and it will set it up for you automatically. I'm sure the same thing will happen if you use the "Reply" button and get the regular post box instead of the quick reply one. But it does make it easy. And, yes, it does work from within the Create Post (or Edit Post) box. And why don't you guys put some avatars up. You all look alike.

I'm not a fan of sweet pickles in potato salad, although that's the way mother always made it and hers was the best. (Not just saying that. I've yet to taste better.) But this deli one (whatever kind it was) was pretty good too. It was good enough where it's not worth my time to try to make it. And they don't over-mayonaise it as most do. And the potatoes are nice a solid, not mushy.

Here's the weed I was talking abut that Gibbnonymous showed me is edible. I just ate a couple leaves. They're all past their prime now. They're a bit tough and bitter. I had a whole glorious bunch I chopped down with the weed-eater a couple weeks ago. I should have made a salad. I'll think of that next time.
