For those of you who might have interest, I want to let you know that tonight at 8:00pm CST, PBS will be broadcasting the New Years Day Concert from Vienna. I suspect it will be shown at 8:00pm at in each time zone.
This is one of the best programs on TV. It combines good music, dance, photography, history and tradition like no other program I know of. The usual vulgarity of modern culture is absent. I hope you take the time to watch.

Well, I checked on PBS, and found that there are pieces from 4 different Strausses, mostly Joseph Strauss Jr. and including both the Blue Danube Waltz and the Radetzky March.

Thank you for the heads up, Mr. Kung. If that works out to 8 Pacific time, I'll check it out.

The New Year's Day Concert just finished here and both my wife and I agree that it was one of the best in years. I can highly recommend it.
If you tune in, the first piece has a musical phrase which will be very familiar to you and all others of us who used to watch classic cartoons on Saturday mornings. It is by Von Suppe.

I think this concert probably had the most Strauss pieces from different members of the family in years.
The Blue Danube Waltz and Radetzky March are played every year as encores. I love them both and the tradition.
If you look in the audience, you will note some famous people in the seats, and lots of Asians. This year I saw Ban Moon Ki and a couple of other faces I recognized vaguely, but I couldn't recall the names. It must be nice to be able to get tickets to the concert.

It can vary from station to station, but something that comes on at 8 pm Central would be 9 pm Eastern or 6 pm Pacific. It will be repeated a couple of times tomorrow, which are listed at pbs.com (which also lists all the songs performed in order).

I just checked again, and PBS reruns the concert a 1 a.m. Eastern, which equates to 10 p.m. Pacific, and it lasts 90 minutes. They'll also repeat it Thursday evening.

Well, I didn’t get a chance to watch it. I got wrapped up in watching some more documentaries. I’ll have to listen to some Strauss now on the side to make up for it.

I can highly recommend it. This is generally light classical and very upbeat. You will see some wonderful sights in and around Vienna as well as some good ballet. The Earl of Grantham makes a very nice host; for obvious reasons not as pleasant as Julie Andrews, but better that Walter Cronkite.
I will not deny that, due to my history, I am somewhat biased as regards this yearly tradition. Nevertheless, my wife who did not study in Vienna or grow up surrounded by music, loves to watch the New Years Day Concert every year. We both love the ritual of the three encores, during which the conductor and orchestra ceremoniously wish the audience, "Prosit Neu Jahr" after playing the first note of "The Blue Danube," and then gets the audience clapping during "The Radetsky March."

If you are not able to catch the repeat of the 2020 New Year Day Concert, here is last year's.
The first hour has the beginning of the concert and then various artists performing in other venues. Go to around the 1:00 hour mark and your will see the whole concert in its entirety. This is broadcast by the BBC not PBS. I admit, I prefer PBS's broadcast which has some more commentary on the dances and other things.
