I was able to download an epub version of American Political and Social History from this link. Part of the problem is that it’s a 73 megabyte file. I’ve downloaded it to my iMac and now have uploaded it to my iCloud space. Now (I think) I’m importing it into my Marvin book reader where I shall be able to follow along with Mr. Flu as he reads the real thing (digital not being real-real) which I will be sending him as soon as I can. Yes, I got it to work. This is obviously still riddled with some OCR mistakes. But it looks readable enough. Chapter 1 starts out with a short poem by Arthur Hugh Clough which itself is worthy of a discussion: In a nutshell, there was something different, even forward-looking (not the Hillary type of “Forward”) in Western man that was absent in other cultures. Instead of denigrating white people we should appreciate the fact that, unlike much of Africa and large parts of Asia, we’re not living in squalor like our great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents did. Actually, educated opinion realized long ago was that the Earth was round. The question was the size. As it happens, Columbus estimated the size of the world based on Ptolemy, which is why he thought he could reach eastern Asia by sailing west. (There was a limit to how long they could supply such a voyage.) As it happens, Ptolemy got it wrong. The Portuguese realized this, and thought the larger estimate made by Eratosthenes was accurate (as in fact it was), which is why they ignored him.
And, indeed, Columbus never made it to Japan or China or the Indies. But there was something else in the way, and he discovered that instead.

I started reading this book. If I had not found it in electronic format, I would have passed it by. It's actually (so far) extremely well written. Whether or not this guy's perspective is factual, I can't always say. But his writing so far is very clear. That alone is reason to sit up and take notice.

I finished the first chapter of American Political and Social History and found it quite interesting so far.
