A friend of mine mentioned this as a much-watch movie. Taking his command, I must-watched it, renting if for $3.99 via Apple TV. VUDU wanted $5.99 for it.
Parasite is a Korean film that received a lot of hoopla and acclaim, including the best-picture Oscar. That in itself is reason for suspicion.
This actually turns out to be a wonderful, sardonic, odd-ball sort of film infused with black comedy and some biting social commentary (basically, I would say, about all classes, rich and poor). But this was true only part of the way.
Spoiler Alert: To talk about this movie effectively I have to mention the ending. But before giving it away, should you watch this fresh? My answer is “probably not.” And I say that because I think the ending is a bust.
They had a nice dark comedy going and it ends in a blood-bath that basically comes out of nowhere and is not consistent with the tone of the rest of the movie. Basically the first 3/4 or so of the movie resembles some of Terry Gilliam’s better work. It’s whacky. It’s often surreal. But there are some interesting oddball characters and situations and it’s certainly interesting.
This movie’s flaws aren’t cleansed in blood but are created by the blood. But, again, I realize most of the rabble out there are going to see it differently. Still, reading through the reviews at IMDB, there are more than a few basically saying, "Yeah, I can see some qualities to this movie, but in no way does it live up to the hype." And that's about where I'd put it.

Until the bloodbath. There’s little doubt that I’m in the minority opinion about this. But basically they took a movie that might have had an interesting message and washed it all away in gratuitous blood. Perhaps this ending itself is an unintentional social commentary, about what condescending film producers think of the public and of their own craft.
The ending couldn’t have implicitly screamed louder “We’re not taking anything seriously, but we hope to hide our nihilism in a bloodbath and thereby make something that will be deemed by many as instantly ‘important.’” And, well, they did get an Oscar for it, so maybe they knew their target audience. But for me, the potential for a truly memorable and perhaps even halfway meaningful movie was flushed down the toilet.
