That's only because somewhere in the past there was Mendels Sohn. No apostrophe used in German.

Re: Janine Jansen - Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 Not that your YouTube video isn't good enough. But if I'm going to listen to that, I want to stream it in lossless stereo on Apple HomoSexual Music that Perverted the Super Bowl Halftime Show (henceforth mercifully shortened to Apple Pervsic). They have Mendelssohn & Bruch: Concertos & Romance (With…) Gewandhausorchester (Mr. Flu will no doubt give us the translation of this), Janine Jansen, Riccardo Chailly. Here's the CD at Amazon. In don't know why the Mendelssohn is packaged together with the Bruch, but I'm listening to the Bruch portion right now and it's very fine as well.

The Gewandhaus is the Leibzig orchestra house. So the Gewandhausorchester is the resident orchestra of the Gewandhaus.
I always found the name strange. Originally, a Gewandhaus was a warehouse for cloth. I do not know the history of how the noun became associated specifically with the Leibzig concert hall.
I believe I have mentioned this before. In June or July of 1973, I was on a Saturday outing from Goettingen, where I was studying German at the Goethe Institute, to I believe Goslar. I went into a Cafe with a young Turkish woman who also studied at the Goethe Institute. In Germany, one often shares a table with others. There was an old man sitting alone at one table and she and I asked if we could sit down. He agreed and we got into a conversation. I have found it is common that old people are often very happy to meet and talk to young people. They seem to brighten up in the presence of healthy youth. This man did brighten up. He must have been about 80 and we were 19 or 20.
It turned out that he was a retired musician, I believe violinist or violist, who had played in the Gewandhausorchestre. During our discussion, he proudly pulled out an old photo (maybe a postcard) of the building. That was the first time I had heard of the place.
P.S. I just saw that Mendelssohn was once Chief Conductor of the Gewandhausorchestre. So was Mahler.

That sounds like a set-up scene of just the kind of movie I like. Fade to 1922 with the orchestra tuning up and this old man, now a young man, in his place under the warm glow of the lights in the string section. A single gunshot is heard in the distance. The house lights momentarily blink . . .

I am glad you liked it. As you may know, I wrote a number pieces for ST, which retold things I had experienced over the years. They were mainly pieces which revolved around some unusual action or a special setting.
Lately, I have been thinking back on my youth and it occurred to me that I experienced many many acts of kindness from people who did not know me. I could give them nothing and, very often, what they did actually cost them something. Yet they were kind to me. These were not "big" people. They may or may not have had a lot of money, but it wasn't obvious to me if they did. Most were simply good, down-to-earth citizens getting on with life.
I like to flatter myself that, at least a small part of the reason, these people were so kind to me was that I was not a prick. In fact, I was very open, naive and something of a dreamer. (Oh ancient days) I was interested in others and wasn't worried about their backgrounds or race. But it could just be that I was lucky in the people I encountered.
My remembrance of that Cafe' in Goslar is one of these experiences. I may just be mis-remembering, but I believe the old man bought the girl and myself a dessert. The word Torte (cake) springs to mind. A small gesture, but still kind. Which leads me to my favorite saying.
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.-Aesop

Along with so much else style and grace was lost in the years 1914-1945. Not just the human loss but the humanity of our fellow man was destroyed by the wars and the aftermath of the Cold War. It was not only war and politics that became mechanized but manners and common curtsey. I doubt we will ever recover it. That may be one reason why classical music still remains popular, it reminds our senses that a time of style and grace did exist for a short time in a land far away called Europe.

Pheromones are way over-rated. But there are things equivalent to that which a person gives off socially or behaviorally (subtle gestures, general demeanor, etc.) that are not under conscious control. Yes, you probably didn't come off as a prick and probably quite the opposite.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Remember when there was the fad where mothers played classical music to their unborn infants because it was supposed to make them smarter? I don't know if there's any good evidence for this. But it could be true if you consider that there can be no doubt that rap music makes one dumber, duller, and more vulgar.
Classical music is civilized. Sinatra's claim to fame could be that he brought this same high-civilization influence to pop music. Yeah, he was a good singer. But there was an air of class and elegance about him. This can easily be contrasted with a society that venerates vulgarity and ugliness.
That short time in a land far away gave us the fruits of Judeo-Christian culture – fruits that could have come from nowhere else and from no other influence. Many were overtly Christian such as Bach or Handel. Others -- the Jewish side, such as Mahler, Mendelssohn -- perhaps less overtly religious, but no less important for the sensibility they brought to their music.
Classical music certainly was not a religious movement, but it was a movement we can see as diametrically opposed to the dumbing-down and vulgarization of music in our era. Even if Mozart was a bit of a screwball, his music evoked something much deeper – so deep and pure it arguably couldn't have come only from that particular man-child. Those notes vibrated in accordance to something truly eternal.
And do you suppose God listens to Mahler or Snoop Dogg?

I am not sure what this says about the homeless, but I find it humorous. Broom 'em out with Bach, Beethoven and Brahms Or whisk them out with Weber and Wagner, dust them away with Debussy and Dvorak, mop them with Mozart, Mendelssohn and Mahler and generally clean them out with classical music.

I am not sure what this says about the homeless, but I find it humorous. It is not necessarily the classical music, but the report mentioned increased police presence as a contributing factor. If the police presence is reduced the crime will go up. Restaurants that had large teen problems used to do this very thing in place of additional security. It did work, to a limited extent. however, the homeless are a different set and require policing to keep their invasive settling to a minimum.

Idagio is working out great. I've been listening to it off and on the last few days and it seems to give me all I need of classical music. I'll wait to cancel Apple Music until April 10. I want to see what their Apple Classical Music looks like first...and that should be coming out any day now.

The Kungian rule applies: Life is Complex.
I hate Apple. I really do. I think they're a smug bunch of assholes. But...my business is built upon using their computers, although it's true it wouldn't be all that impossible to move to a PC...and thus deal with a new set of assholes.
But one can at least reduce one's exposure to the assholes. So I did indeed cancel Apple Music. These assholes will not get one more dime out of me than is absolutely necessary.
Plus – get this – these assholes are not making Apple Classic Music available on the iPad. It will be for the iPhones only. So a premium-oriented service is not going to be on their premium-oriented product. And this product (a pad) is the one whose extra screen real estate could make better use of searching for music and viewing supposedly all the extra information that will be included about composers, etc. Baffles the mind, really. Assholes. Idiots.

It's been about two months now without Apple Music and I don't miss it. They've sent me a couple emails to see if my will had weakened, offering me three months for free, or something like that.
But in this case, I'm contravening one of the basic Kungians truths of life and am loving my values more than I love the world. So what values are those?
1) Not to give any more money than necessary to creepy, somewhat pervy-friendly tech companies such as Apple whose primary business is to spread digital addiction via products made with slave labor in China.
2) Not throwing away money. The free version of Adagio is good enough for classical music. For the other types of music, I have plenty of CDs…or I just don't miss it because it's all so dated (except for Frank...I have his entire catalog in Torrented mp3s).
Those are the main values that I can think of. Given Apple's sponsorship of the perverted Super Bowl halftime show, they should be thought of as the Bud Light of tech companies and treated accordingly.
