Well, it might not be a bad thing to think about secession. Such talk at the moment may be driven by hyperventilating hot-heads. But I do think a reasonable man could see the long-term writing on the wall.
The question is: Is this a geographical question? Can you save the head by detaching it from the body? Or does this particular disease cross all boundaries?
That would be my concern, that what is actually a problem not of geography (or local control) is something else. So, by all means, secede from the union. Then what next? Secede from Austin? Should some of the counties secede to distance themselves from some of the other urban counties, such as Dallas County (to the extent that any county in Texas can be termed “urban” — big state…lots of open land)?
Texas has several advantages. It is clearly large enough to be a country unto itself (and once was, of course). It’s not land-locked. And it does have some geographical distance between itself and California or Washington DC, where the infection is the worst.
I don’t know where things stand now in Texas. But Job#1 would be to, right now, cease taking any Federal money for anything at all. If you can’t do that first then secession is just a pipe dream.

The bill which was submitted actually only suggests that the subject should be taken to the public in order to have a discussion. It is a long way actually putting the question of secession up for a referendum.
The "argumentum ad absurdum" can be applied to just about every such discussion. Adults are required to work with reality and find workable solutions. Fundamentally, your observation points out the basic question of balancing "security and liberty." It also brings up the question of how large or small a political unit can be and still survive. These are practical, not theoretical, questions. They can only be answered by actual implementation of a political plan.
This would have to be done with a simultaneous halt of all payments to the Federal Government. I can imagine the Federal Government might be somewhat irritated by Texas refusing money (bureaucrats consider spending a sign of success) but fury would be the Federal Government's reaction to a halt of payments from Texas to D.C.

In the spring of 1861 Col. Robert E. Lee was called to Blare House and offered command of all Federal forces with immediate promotion to major general. We all know that he refused but his explanation is lost to history. He said, "My home is Virginia, the government of my home is in Virginia, not in Washington DC." Although Lee considered himself a loyal American he could not invade his own state.
I wonder how many Americans today have the same clarity of vision? Gentlemen, if Texes leaves the union I will go with her.

I think fundamentally it is a question of…Now that we’ve seceded, when do we start building a wall around Austin?
My view is the Progressivism and Big Government (they go hand-in-hand) are so large and out of control — infecting the social and psychological space, not just the governmental space — that the only secession that will be meaningful is moving the state to Mars and then killing (or imprisoning) every person who thinks the Constitution is “a living document” (that is, made of rubber for the Communists to bend any way they want).
In fact, before getting on the Space Ark on the way to Texasmarsnia, there would be an official questionnaire. Miss one question and you’re off. Something like:
1) How many sexes are there? 2) Do rights come from Nancy Cuntlosi or God Almighty? 3) Who shot JR?
Etc.
I do think it will be extremely difficult to build a legal wall between Texas (or any state) and this nonsense. My heretical notion is that if you scratch a conservative, he’ll yell “Hands off my Social Security.” There are a few people like Pat out there who are serious and independent people. But the Pats are few and far between.
Absolutely.

Did you hear that caller today on Rush who noted how pathetic young male workers are? He said a mother of one of the guys he balled out for being two hour late to work called him to complain. Things are quite different today. Clarity is on the bottom of the list of traits that most people have.
Although I question how honorable it was to support a rebellion against the Constitution instigated by a bunch of slave-owning hot-heads who were all rushing to think of themselves as victims, there is little to be said these days for identifying with Washington DC. I’ve long said that I think the capital should be moved around about every decade. Let these assholes work from home over DSL lines like the rest of us if they don’t want to move. But that concentration of power must be broken up.

After the Mongols had conquered northern China the leaders had a meeting to discuss what should be done with it. One general suggested it be cleared and used as pasture. I think the same thing could be done with Austin and its environs. I would not be quite as brutal in clearing Austin of its population as the general would have been with northern China. Perhaps it is because a fair amount of good work does come from some of our elected officials. It is clear that the heavy lifting to protect our rights as citizens will have to be done in the States. Texas A.G. sends out CIDs

A moving capital was very common in medieval times in Europe and Asia. Courts would move around a country in order for rulers to get a better feel for his subjects and local issues.

Once governor Abbott signs this bill, it will become law. Texas will be the most populous state with permit-less carry laws. I am sure the recent lawlessness as exhibited by the FBI and DOJ have something to do with this. People are concerned and will protect themselves. Open Carry

Arkansas has been a constitutional open/canceled carry state for almost 8 years. We are only a few steps away from making AR a second amendment sanitary state that will nullify any federal legislation designed to limit 2A rights. In the words of B Franklin, "If we don't hang together, we will surely hang separately "

Attacking the defenders of the Alamo is close to being sacrilegious in Texas. Of course, that is what leftist scum are. We have too many leftists and foreigners (Americans from Blue States) in Texas. But there are still many of us who will stand up for Texas. Our motto was and still is "Remember the Alamo!" Leftist get Texas history wrong

Our motto was and still is "Remember the Alamo!" True enough, even here in Texas North where roughly 1/3 of students at the U of A go to school and about 1/3 of the tenured faculty hail from Texas. What do you call a women who can shoot with either hand, drink all night, have sex anywhere and anytime and wrestle a panther? You might call her honey, but most call her a Texan. Gadsden had it right "don't tied on me"

Funny that these people who want to "save the planet" can't start with the human race first. Maybe along with the whales, save the unborn.
I'm convinced that we're at the point that so many people believe strange things that it's become impossible to think rationally and reasonably about anything as a society.

Arkansas rated I think #76 beats #15 Texas in Fayetteville 40-21 and the last TX touchdown was a gift to kill time. Welcome to the SEC Texas gets to play Alabama every year.
