It might also be true that behind every bad man is a bad woman.
In 1958’s Machine-Gun Kelly, Charles Bronson plays the henpecked bank robber with the big gun. But deep down, he has a morbid fear of dying.
Egging him onto becoming the “big man” is his brassy girlfriend, Flo Becker, played brilliantly by Susan Cabot. There’s even a role in this for Morey Amsterdam as the pickup man, Michael Fandango.
The print quality is fairly poor but I do think it improves at or before the halfway point. It could just be the one of the reels was in better shape than the other.
There is a Mystery Science Theater 3000 aspect to the movie in being unintentionally funny at times. Kelly is the Rodney Dangerfield of hoodlums. He gets no respect. Anyone and everyone eggs on, bad-mouths, and otherwise pushes around the bad guy with the big gun. Even though Machine-Gun Kelly is in charge of his little band of bank robbers and kidnappers, you sometimes wouldn't know it. Many court disaster (and find it) by trying to push around the bad guy with the big gun.
This film is apparently very very loosely based on the real man. Still, I found it to be a highly watchable film from start to finish. It’s good entertainment despite the unintentional campiness at times. Bronson is good at times and sometimes his acting (the early scene where he is laughing) is cringe-worthy. But overall he does a fine job.
This is another film you can find for free on the Movieland TV add-on channel. I have it added to my Roku but I’m pretty sure you can add it to a Fire tablet as well.
