The Museum is a Welsh 6-part soap opera centered around a cougar-like museum director whose life is complicated by an affair with a 20-something boy.
One reviewer perhaps gets to the heart of it: “Toothless soap opera with dark but harmless overtones.” Still, it is a soap opera and hangs together well enough for 4-1/2 episodes. After that it suffers from the common disease of “runs on too long” or “trying to stretch out thin material too far.”
Still, the setup is good and the acting is better than average. The plot becomes intriguing then eventually is not heavy in skeleton enough to really take the story to the next level. This is pretty tame stuff. But I won’t mark it down because it does not have gratuitous sex, violence, and foul language.
Most of the dialogue is in Welsh with some English phrases thrown in occasionally. Probably Steffan Cennydd is the stand-out as the troubled yute looking to have an affair with the 40-something museum director. Nia Roberts (as Della, the director) is played well enough as sort of a reptilian controller and social climber.
I think the problem with this one is that it is a little too restrained. At some point there should be more shit hitting the fan and it never really does. The series actually sort of peters out on a minor plot twist that, for me, brings nothing but yawns. They were trying to be clever but it just comes off as unimaginative. Perhaps they are trying to set up a second season. But I wouldn’t watch it if they did.
The draw is stupid or creepy people doing dumb things and everyone trying to take advantage of everyone or to stab someone else in the back. It’s very Shakespearean in that way. But it doesn’t have the gravitas of plot to carry it much beyond 4 episodes or so. By the fifth or sixth you’re just waiting for it to end.
But it’s something to watch that isn’t half bad.
