I took my best girl to see the Elvis movie today, senior discount day. The movie is a fair representation of Elvis career as I remember it. Tom hanks plays Col Parker. The makers of the movie obviously do not like Parker and he is portrayed in an odious, manipulating, predatory fashion. Does Parker deserve this harsh treatment, I think yes. Elvis is portrayed as a victim. I think that is overdone. He walked into the relationship with Parker with his eyes wide shut. Parker was a promoter and a carny in the 40s and 50s. His approach to Elvis and all performers was by its nature predatory.
Tell an 18 year old singer from the backwater of Memphis that he can be a millionaire and only you can make that happen and then do it; you may be predatory but you have also fulfilled your promise. The movie is a nostalgic trip through the 50s, 60s and 70s. All of Elvis biggest hits make an appearance. Tom Hanks as Col Parker is excellent acting worthy of merit, even if the real person he portrays is scum.
