Info: IMDB, Amazon Prime Video
Genre: action, crime, dark comedy
Type: series (6 seasons, 2010-2015)
Runtime: 41 minutes per episode
Starring: Timothy Olyphant, Nick Searcy, Joelle Carter
Summary: Old-school U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns in eastern Kentucky.
Quick Rating: A series that shows some promise in its first three or four episodes but then devolves from a gritty cops-and-robbers show with some dark-humor quirkiness to mere daytime soap opera status with continuing characters who really should have been one-and-outers.
Timothy Olyphant somewhat reprises his role of Seth Bullock from HBO’s Deadwood series. Both Bulluck and U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens are stoic, understated, ice-in-the-veins law officers who speak softly and carry a big stick.
Things get hot for Givens at his Miami post and he is reassigned to his home state of Kentucky. His new boss is a good ol’ boy with some character, played by Nick Searcy. The dialogue is often snappy. Witty understatement is the rule. And Givens usually has a strangely cordial relationship with the people he is after which can lead to some moments of good dark humor.
After two episodes, it’s difficult to know if the formula will hold up. Olyphant’s charm, such as it is, is often skin deep. Many of the situations he is in seem better suited for a Coen brothers film. This look-alike mild copy doesn’t quite have the snap of the original. Still, he’s a likable character. The Zeitgeist is adult, not vulgar, and smart, not stupid. It shows promise.
