An excellent obit on the late Paul Johnson. I could disagree with him on minor issues but he always seemed to get the big ones right. www.americanthinker.com/blog/2023/01/the_great_paul_johnson_rip.htmlI loved his characterization of Augusto Pinochet as "the most misunderstood man of the 20th century." Pinochet is one of the left's biggest boogiemen, the evil right-wing dicatator. But I spent time studying him and his Chicago Boys' revolution, which transformed Chile from a typical third world socialist hellhole to a sleek, modern, capitalist, prosperous, corruption-free democracy, reading the seminal history of ChileI was there in September of 73 and this description is accurate.

I was an admirer of Johnson. Through the years, I watched him on various talk shows or internet interviews and he was very interesting in all. I have an older paperback copy of his A History of the American People which I read long ago. It is over 1,000 pages long, so maybe not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. He made it into his 90s, so he had a good run.

Holy history, Batman. Have you ever read a more succinct explanation for why history matters? Here's his Amazon page for future reference.

While perusing his Amazon page, I noticed that he also wrote, The Birth of the Modern. I had forgotten that, even though I have the book and read it long ago. As I recall, while I thought it a fine book, I did not agree with some of his conclusions. I would have to re-read it to be specific, but at over 1,000 pages, I think I will have to pass.

Yuze guys might get around to reading about or commenting about that one chick who de-transitioned. But I can't help thinking how central this point is: It is quite possible (even likely) that Chloe Cole's history in regards to male/female had been totally wiped out and re-written by The Usual Suspects. She had no objective outside reference point. She had no way to make sense of what she was thinking and feeling because the wisdom of the ages had been mostly erased, ridiculed, and redacted. We can (and should) berate these people for making such obviously foolish choices. But we might come to understand that the absurd can somewhat easily (or more easily) seem reasonable if you are ensconced within a framework of wall-to-wall loony. Without knowing where we've been, you're going to have hard time figuring out where to go.
