Can you imagine anyone making that film today? Can you imagine a star like Jimmy Stewart today?
Over the years, I have seen a greater appreciation for Stewart and some other stars of yesteryear who one might not have thought of as "great" actors. James Cagney and Mickey Rooney come to mind.

One of the few modern pieces which I consider timeless. The singer died on June 5, 2023. Stan Getz was, by all accounts, a cock sucker. He cheated and misused those around him. That doesn't stop this from being a classic. It was Astrud Gilberto who made this song, not Getz.

Yes, a classic song. I know nothing about Stan Getz, but you could knock me over with a feather if you suggest that many of those in the music industry are dirtbags.

Sinatra's rendition if good, but it makes me want to hear the original. That has a somewhat haunting mood, which gives me a tingly feeling. The words of the song show the guy watching the girl is in despair. One doesn't get that feeling from Sinatra. Sinatra...in despair? Get outta here. One of the reasons I did not go into the business. But I later found out that dirtbags abound across the spectrum.  |

He died today.
I had a friend in Japan who loved to sing this song when we visited bars in Tokyo. This was before Karaoke. Actual pianists were playing. It brings back memories.

I was trying to figure out who that might be. My first thought was Andy Williams. Not everyone's cup of tea but a hell of a singer. Perry Como? Bobby Darin? Harry "I'm a Communist Kook" Belafonte? Roy Orbison? Nat King Cole? No one has forgotten Dean Martin or Sammy Davis Jr. Likewise Elvis or Johnny Cash. I give up. No….we can't forget the great Glenn Miller.
Of course the playlist played on, and it came to this song that reminded me of an old joke. Someone's even written an entire parody:

A very nice rendition. To my mind, the musicians are displaying the proper "Mood" for this song. They are obviously having a lot of fun.
I wonder if the two sax soloists, old and young man, are related? Father and son?

Yeah, it's possible that they are related. The hair/no-hair thing makes it difficult to say for sure.
Lots of funny things to watch in that, including the guy in the back left who does a spin at precisely the 2:15 mark. Cracks me up.

One primary feature of today's culture is the chase for novelty. I think it's become so ingrained that nobody is satisfied with anything anywhere anyhow.What is "transgenderism" but a fad, an attempt to be as novel as possible? Extreme novelty is all around us. Do we really need to choose between 30 brands of toothpaste? That's not a plea for the government restricting choice, but do we? The necessity to always one-up the previous Novelty Champion has driven our pop culture bat-shit crazy. Exhibit A;  This is why although there are many Kungian Rules (as there should be, because life is indeed complex...which is one of the rules), there is only one Nelsonian Rule: Opt out of Popular Culture in order to Save Your Sanity (if not also your dignity). |
