I ran across this site that lists six online sites for finding free or low-cost books: How to Find Infinite Free Kindle Books to Read. At the top of the list is Bookbub. I've used them before. But having made a lot of use of the Libby app to borrow books from my local library, I sort of forgot about this one. But the site seems much improved since last I looked. I've already grabbed a couple good suggestions. One is Tom Lowe's Cemetery Road. Right now it's free so this would be a good one to download now for a rainy day. I also ran across The Best Punctuation Book, Period in their non-fiction section. As an Editor (even an unpaid one), it's useful for me to keep up on this topic. This book is not free, but it comes at a reduced price of $2.99. I bought it and began perusing it. It looks like a good read (for its kind) and a great resource. I haven't yet checked out any of those other sites. They may prove useful at finding free or low-cost good books as well.

Bookbub also featured this book for $2.99: Word By Word. Having read the good The Professor and the Madman regarding the making of the Oxford English Dictionary, this book piqued my interest. Before buying a book, I usually check to see if my local library has it. They do. I borrowed and and I’ll get back to you on how I like it.

I have registered with BookBub to see how it works out. Will let you know what I think once I start reading one of the books I have selected.

You're not required to sign up for anything. But I think it can be convenient to have them send a daily (weekly?) list of suggested offerings. But I just wanted all to know that you don't have to register at Bookbub in order to browse their site.

Thanks. I'll see how things go. If I don't like it, I will de-register.

I have a friend who gets a lot of books, though I don't know if they're free. He seems them to friends, including me, and it can involve a lot of books. (In one recent day, he sent perhaps a hundred books from the Destroyer series, including Mugger Blood, which we discussed a few years ago at ST.) He also gets a lot of books from Baen, but I think that may not be free. There's some sort of monthly deal from them.

I checked, and it seems he gets some from bookbub and Barnes and Noble. But his main source seems to be manybooks (https://manybooks.net/). I checked it out and had a hard time locating specific books, but it does have a LOT available for free. Sometimes his comments indicate uncertainty about how reliably they're transcribed, but not often.

Browsing ManyBooks.net, I came across Steven Levy’s book, Hackers, Heroes of the Computer Revolution. I’ve read a couple hacker books and can’t remember if I read this one. So I signed up and downloaded it….and then discovered it was also free on Gutenberg as well. Any way you can get there, I guess.
