Ordinary Men
The Men of Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland
Christopher R. Browning
The book is available at Amazon kindle for free if you have an unlimited account or purchase on kindle for $14.95.
Also, as a one-hour documentary on Netflix just released.
I read the book several years ago and found it interesting. The documentary is more focused for the time and money if you have a subscription to Netflix. Well worth the effort. Whichever medium you choose the subject is centered on how friends and neighbors not only witnessed the murder of thousands of Jews, but actively participated in the murders.
The men of Police Battalion 101 were not fanatical Nazis, ideologs or just Jew haters. Yet, under orders by their commanding officers they shot thousands of Jewish civilians. The rationalization of many of the battalion members was it was going to be done even without their participation, and refusal would subject them to courts marshal. In fact, those who refused were simply given other duties away from the killing fields. The book makes clear that this policy was evident through similar battalions in the occupied countries.
The book and documentary explore how bakers, carpenters, and office workers could continence the wholesale murder of thousands. The central question is what motivated these men to commit mass murder? Peer pressure surely explains some of the reasoning, perhaps the bulk of it. However, we must ask ourselves, are we different from the men of 101?
The polarization of our political landscape is becoming more evident daily. Left and right are separating into regions, not just north and south but coasts v. middle. We have had riots in major cities over the last several years. New brown shirts now call themselves by other names but, do we have any comfort that they will be any less brutal than the men of 101? Do we have any indication that our neighbors will be more compassionate and caring of the men of 101? How many of the people in your neighborhood will obey orders and pull the trigger on you?
After the years of blind compliance of the Covid fraud should we take any comfort in the ability of government to protect our rights? Do you think that Joe Biden would refrain from ordering the execution of his opposition, when he condones the sentencing to as much as 10 years people who simply walked through a door held open by capital policeman?
Unlike Nazi Germany we do have a safeguard. At present there are at least 300 million guns in private hands and the left neo-Nazis are pressuring massive registration and confiscation under so0called red flag laws. It is the only thing holding the left back. It would have been the only thing stopping the Nazis. Make no mistake, the left, Nazi, and the holocaust are directly related.
