This is a first installment of a future historians view of the 21st century
Future History of the 21st Century
Prologue to chaos:
2000-2009
Historians of the 22nd century ask, what happened to the United States in the 21st century? The new century began radiantly, and slowly over the first 25 years degraded into constant conflict. The fall of the old Soviet Union in the 1990s gave the consensual governments of the west space to expand economic and political boundaries. By 2000 those boundaries included most of, what was the Warsaw Pact countries. No one in Europe wanted to return to status quo of the Cold War era.
In 2000 America changed presidents and political parties and affable, George W. Bush was elected after weeks of vote counting in Florida, a harbinger of election controversy to come. The country settled in for four years of quiet prosperity and peace. The American people were told the Soviet threat was over and done. Billions spent on defense by democrat and republican presidents and congress would now be directed to those who had paid for the cold war.
Over the next several months the Bush administration did just that, holding down military spending and promoting home economic growth. All was well until the ninth of September 2001. On 911 Moslem terrorists commandeered airplanes and flew two of them into the World Trade Buildings in NYC bringing down the massive buildings, a third airplane hit the military command center The Pentagon, and a fourth plane crashed into the ground in Pennsylvania.
George W. Bush the son of George Bush, a one term President, did not expect to be a war time president. America struck back. Intelligence determined that Afghanistan was harboring the terrorists who planned and executed the 911 attack. Utilizing special forces America struck back and overthrew the Taliban government in twelve weeks and would occupy large parts of Afghanistan for the next twenty years. The mission changed from forcing the perpetrators to pay for the 911 attack to nation building. Regular military forces were sent into the country and America was setting up to be there for a long time.
In 2002 the Bush administration, ever watchful of the Hussain regime in Iraq, that the ruler of Iraq, Saddam Hussain was accumulating CBW and nuclear materials. The Iraqi regime never denied the goal of developing these weapons and other western intelligence agencies confirmed the Iraqi programs.
After several months of increasing rhetoric from both sides. A collation of western nations, mostly American and British invaded Iraq, and deposed Hussain in less then two months. After a complete examination of every site in Iraq it was determined that the supposed CBW, and nuclear programs had been discontinued but the Hussain regime continued to lie about the existence of the programs. As in the previous experience in Afghanistan, the Bush administration settled in for a long occupation and more “nation building”. Nearly twenty years later there are still American forces in Iraq. Peace keeping and nation building are no longer government policy.
The presidential election in 2004 was won by George W. Bush, more by default then by excellence. The American people were reluctant to change leaders in the middle of what was proving to be a grim occupation of Iraq. The first attempt to subdue the city of Fallujah was not successful and killed and injured from insurgents were high. The Bush administration increased troop levels and American Marines occupied Fallujah. Effectively ending organized resistance, however, resistance continued to pop up in areas with less troop presence. There was a small but continuing trail of killed and injured. In 2008 the American people were tired of “nation building” and the presidential race in America brought in two nearly identical candidates from each party, Barack Obama from Illinois, and John McCain from Arizona.
In the fall of 2008, a financial crisis created by low interest rates and government mandates to lenders requiring them to make mortgage loans to individual with poor credit, even no credit, forced the closure of banks and lending companies. The resulting credit crunch shook investors and even major industries were forced into involuntary bankruptcy. McCain suspended his election efforts and rushed to Washington D.C. to give the appearance of action and Obama continued to blame republicans and McCain for the economic crisis. Obama heavily applied the race card in the last weeks before the election and gathered over 90% of the Black vote, winning election after serving two years in the Senate. He appointed his democrat rival, Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
Enter the Communist control of American government.
