Oh, you mean the way leftists become abusive if one disagrees with them? Sounds like a cult to me.

As I've said before, I consider leftism (like Islamism) a political cult, combining aspects of religion, politics, and mind control into a pestilential doctrine.
Of course, another definition of cult that I got from a friend decades ago is that a cult is a religion that relies on conversions rather than inheritance for new members. Thus, Mormonism long ago moved from cult to religion, and on that basis maybe even Scientology has by now. The two definitions are incompatible (for example, by this one Islam wouldn't be a cult, and probably not leftism either).

The Millerites went down this road twice. Miller admitted error recalculated his dates and thousands of people sold everything they owned and waited for the second coming. Thus, ended Miller and his followers. Unless Miller was reincarnated as P T. Barnam.

Millennialists of one shape or form always spring up from time to time. If 1%, or so, of humanity is made up of psychopaths how much larger must the percentage of suckers be? I think P.T. Barnum had a pretty good grasp of the potential. There is no money in selling to psychos, but oodles of cash in selling to the sheep. I think the psychos leading some of these cults are very well aware of this.

Whatever one believes about the Church (Roman Catholicism), it is a bureaucracy. And when that happens, it becomes the difference between a political party and patriotism. One is a vessel that holds all kinds of gunk for all kinds of purposes. The other is a true emotion.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the Left (Progressivism and various flavors and off-shoots) is a cult.
There are two things that link Judaism and authentic Christianity: Humility. God is great but we’re a bunch of slubs in need of Grace.
There is no step two. But on the Progressive side, these guys really do think the sun shines out of their bums. And their political and social ideas are completely tied to their identity. Prick it and they not only bleed but they become enraged.
I’d like to think that I believe strongly in certain things but if someone can show me a better way, I’ll give a listen. That is, whatever “self esteem” I have (and it ain’t much) isn’t tied to some ass-wipe’s political platform or a bunch of loons marching in lockstep behind a rainbow flag.
We can debate terms (and should), but true “liberalism” is all but dead in this country — or at least dead to those who purport to be for free and open discourse.
Of course, I purport that the hippy movement (and forerunners to it) were never about “letting it all hang out,” about maximizing personal freedom, etc. It was all about glorifying being the lowest common denominator.

That is an absolutely central aspect of any cult (and more than a few religions). Yes, membership drives are needed in many areas of life and are (or can be) generally peaceful and productive pursuits. I have no problem with prothletising.
But this is where it gets interesting and the crucial distinction made regarding cults: Is a new convert just a new convert or is my whole sense of self-worth and identity based on people believing exactly what I do?
You have to respect a man, even if he looks you in the eye and tells you that you are full of shit. The alternative is this creepy-cult aspect where everyone has to think alike and god forbid someone’s ideas are ruffled. That’s one effed up world that I never want to live in. But cults breed just that. The political/social cult of Leftism breeds just that.
