A little bit earlier this afternoon, while changing channels, I chanced on a movie titled "Cloverfield." I recalled hearing the name and vaguely knew that it was supposed to be some type of monster movie, so I decided to have a look. I must admit, I could not make it past ten minutes.
This was one of the most irritating movies I have ever come across. I understand the idea was to present the film as an actual video recording by someone caught in NYC during a monster invasion, but this movie is stark proof that "realism" can be overdone. Jerky doesn't begin to describe the style of this thing. And worse still is that some of the jerkiness seemed affectation.
Most of the film I saw consisted of a murky dark screen with some points of light, being windows and street lights. There was also the occasional explosion thrown in. I did catch a very fleeting and blurry glimpse of the "monster", but it wasn't enough to hold my interest. As a result, I cannot inform the reader what the movie was actually about.
From the little of it that I saw, I could not recommend this film to any intelligent person. On the other hand, it might be useful to our troops overseas in trying to break terrorist prisoners they need to interrogate, or for entertaining a bored millennial whose iPhone battery needs recharging.
I can not get my ten minutes back, but readers, you have been warned!

This reminds me of the "movie" at the end of the Peter Sellers comedy After the Fox, which is shown at the Fox's trial to expose his movie-making as just a sham to hide his efforts to pick up a shipment of stolen gold. It's obviously a fake, though a movie critic rushes forward to praise it extravagantly. (The Fox is sent to prison anyway.) Something similar happens in an episode of Gilligan's Island, with similar results.
I assume this wasn't quite as bad.

It seems to me that there was a sequel not long ago equally as bad.
This is part of series of awful movies based on the Blair Witch movies where the terrible production values are intentional so as to make it "realistic". You can add to the type all the Bigfoot and alien flying saucers photos and movies.

I never saw the "Blair Witch Project" (I blv that was the name) I did see a short clip which was a bunch of kids running around in the woods, as I recall. I couldn't work up any interest in that film as well. Call me old fashioned, but I like a story line with beginning, middle and end.
And if I want to watch home-films or have the feeling I am bouncing around in a car with a bad suspension, I can watch old video I took, or even 8mm film my family took 60 years ago.

Yes, that is a completely awful movie.
