there is that "Participated" link in the upper right
That is helpful.
Under the Profile tab, I also went to the where it said, "Others you might know" and clicked the "follow" icon. I am waiting to see how this works. I hope it is not just sending me an email each time one of you posts.

Oh. I see that now, Mr. Kung. I didn't know that existed. I will say that at first I thought the "Participated" window was just a bunch of junk. Now a quick click on it and I can see any new posts. And when I visit that post, the "New" label disappears...which is pretty much what Timothy was asking for. I'm just not sure if it acts that way be default or if that behavior started when I went into the notifications area and turned on the ability to be instantly notified of any new post. That section doesn't say how one will be notified so that's the reason for the confusion.

I can now go to bed looking forward to a surprise of some sort tomorrow when I log in. Who knows how I will be notified of your postings? Only the Shadow.

I have it set to be notified when you are going to bed. In fact, I know if you are sleeping. I know if you're awake. And I know if you're being bad or good.

Does that mean I will get a Christmas present? I'm always good, except when I'm not.

Well, I get e-mail notifications every time someone responds to one of my Disqus postings. (That's usually a lot of them at certain times, such as when I wake up). This will probably work similarly.

I just checked the Notifications on my Profile, and it lists people quoting me, followers (thanks, kungfuzu), and being made a moderator.

Don't go for the "Instant" notification of any new posts unless you want to be swamped by emails. It seems the "New" notification feature in the "Participated" box is a separate thing and doesn't need "Instant" to be turned on. That's good.

The forums have now been upgraded from a "Shoutbox" to a Chatbox. I never quite understood why anyone would think "Shoutbox" was good terminology.
And there's an experimental feature running (Gibbnonymous may like this) that automatically saves a draft of your post as you go. In case you don't post it (or something happens), the theory is the text will be saved when you come back to that thread. (A dialogue will pop up offering to continue with the same text again.) We'll see how this works in practice. What will be required, of course, is some clear feedback. Let me know if you like, dislike, or it's not working in a way that makes much sense, etc.

Brad, I've already utilized your previous advice, to copy my post just in case. I discovered that my internet "connection" is the issue. It can be described as tentatively intermittent at times.

I totally get that, Gibbnonymous. And in such cases, one never really knows what the problem is. Bad modem? Unruly computer? Bad something on the side of the provider? Sunspots? Deer nibbling at some outside cable?
To the best of my knowledge, everyone has these issues. When they get bad (depending upon your setup), unplug the modem or router. Wait about 15 seconds. Then plug it back in and give it a few minutes to reset itself. I have to do that around here once in a while and we are generally quite free from dear.

Well, as usual (so far), when I posted just a short while ago, I found I had to login (eventually I'll remember to do it first), and when I came back it was gone and nothing popped up to let me resume. I think I can understand why this happened. In any case, fortunately it was a very short posting. But this would be very useful when I want to check something out in the middle of posting -- especially if I'm reading a book using EPUB, which uses up my Edge connection.

There is (I think) a little checkbox when you log in that gives you the option to stay logged in. Even so, it seems common that this isn't entirely persistent. Certainly on my iPad I've had to log in several times even though that box had been checked.
Why any of you commit time to a post without having it preserved somewhere else is beyond me. But perhaps this auto-save feature will come in handy. But if you're not logged in then, yeah, I can see why that wouldn't do any good.

The login stays as long as the computer is on, even if in background mode. (I close it to put the tray there for meals.)

There is now a "Donate" button at the bottom of the home page just above Gibbnonymous' flag. For some reason the "Quote Highlighted Text" plugin was conflicting in some way with the footer areas so I had to ditch that. No big deal.
Feel free to donate just because. But so far (other than time) there are no costs being incurred.
At some point there is going to appear advertising on the top and bottom of the site. If we want to get rid of that, it costs $7.00 a month. And that will certainly not be a priority since the ads I've seen on other sites aren't very intrusive.
Other potential costs are increasing the space for attachments. The site is allocated 200 MB with a 1 MB limit per attachment. We've already discussed ways to avoid this altogether (such as linking images from DuckDuckGo.com or Google Photos).
The next upgrade tier for attachment storage is 500 MB which costs $3.00 per month.

There has been un upgrade to the color picker (both in the Create Post and Quick Post editors). You can save favorite colors for re-use (for standard color-coding and that sort of thing). That, for me, could prove useful as I (when I post something lengthy or formal) try to stick to a color scheme. You know, as with the articles at ST, your name in red at the top of the article, etc.
This is not a standard I can or will enforce. You all should do what you want. But if you want to learn a few quick and easy ways to format things, I can show you. And these ways will (in general) be quick and easy or I won't bother with them myself.
That is, highlight some text, choose the Font Color icon (top row, furthest to the left) and apply a color. Any color you choose can also be saved as one of your stock colors.

Here's another useful upgrade. The pagination for a thread is now shown at the top and bottom. ST had the same thing. It's a pain to be all the way down at the bottom of a thread and have to go back up to the top to go to a next or previous page in a thread. Plus, it's visual feedback that there even is more than one page. I like this now.
Note: I can change the setting for how many posts there are on a page before it starts a new page. I think it may be a tad short now. That is, the thread could be longer before it starts a new page. What do you think?

Does anyone here use SoundCloud regularly enough to want an easy way to post music? A plugin does exist.

Woo hoo! We have ads! I guess that's an upgrade. Maybe a sidegrade? If there are any OCD types out there, all it cost is $7.00 a month to get rid of them. Given how most of you haven't donated anything (I exempt Mr. Kung for reasons of my own), I think we'll be seeing those ads for some time. And, really, I hardly think it would be worth paying just to get rid of them. They are of no harm.
So far, the only three ads I've seen have all been advertising ProBoards (the site that hosts this forum).

I put the "Profile" menu item in the "Site" drop-down menu in order to try to get the "Hi [your user name] Logout" item to not wrap to a different line. With that banner ad now at the top, I wanted to consolidate the space a little better.
If you add any "Bookmarks" that will automatically ad a "Bookmarks" menu...which will probably push the Name/Logout message to a different line anyway. Let me know what your experience is.
