Brad,
Interestingly, the ProBoards ad doesn't disturb the balance of the header. I wonder how much of that was forethought on their part and how much was good design by you?

I agre. If we have to have an ad, that sort of fits in. There are two at the bottom of the page as well. I have seen a couple ads appear in another browser that weren’t ads for ProBoards. But most have been for ProBoards.

Logging in or out is totally up to each member. I don't see any advantage to logging out. It's not like anyone is storing credit cards numbers or anything here. However, if Mr. Gibbnonymous were to "borrow" your computer, he could say all kinds of wild things in your stead. How we would notice the difference is, of course, a matter for debate.

I haven't been logging out, just as I didn't previously (and not just at ST). In many sites, logging in requires remembering the password, which I usually don't. (I had them copied down, but many moves, especially to a nursing home, mean I have no idea where that list is now.)
Incidentally, I've seen a relatively unobtrusive ad at the top, a recent one being for Staples. No problem so far. Most sites have a lot more ads, and many of them with sound. This is very annoying when I have something else on and have to locate the noisy (and noisome) ad.

Thanks for the feedback. And no kidding about ads with sounds. I simply will not return to a site that has that. And if this site ever goes for that, I will post all the information needed for using ad-blocking software. As it is, I wish to honor the "free" give-and-take of ProBoards and not do so. It seems right and fair. But if they cross over the line, there are ways to eliminate that.

Well, I'm probably officially encouraged to ask people not to use any ad blocker when they visit these forums. But I use it on my iPad. Some sites have become all but unusable without them. And that's the thing. I doubt anyone is particularly freaked out by seeing an ad. The problem comes when they make it difficult to access the information you're looking for.

If you see a post with run-on sentences and no puncuation, that would be my Mr. G. What he lacks in writing skills, he makes up for in sweetness.

Unless a husband makes a fortune through his writing skills, I would bet a wife much prefers a husband's sweetness. Even if he makes a fortune writing, I suspect a wife still prefers a husband's sweetness. Just think what a good writer and asshole George Will is at one and the same time. I'd put money on it that his being an asshole came naturally, while his becoming a good writer took practice and occured much later.
George was a royal asshole long before he became an anti-Trumpster.

Naked, we might look pretty silly. Writing is the suit we put on to dress ourselves up. We can make ourselves presentable.
The dangers are falsehood and intellectualism. We can take it too far. It's like those boys who dress up as girls and demand to be called a girl. They take it too far. But dressing up and play-acting is a old as time and generally a healthy pursuit (although as Mr. Kung informs me, acting has always been regarded as a low profession).
Ideally, we find a sweet spot between dressing up and being real. We are eloquent but not full-of-it.

As you know, this is something I have said for many years. But I have now found the fountainhead of such low behavior. Until now.
After reading Durrant's "The Life of Greece" I learned that actors came by their low reputations naturally, i.e. drama came from wild abnormal, immoral behavior which was part of the Dionysian rites. Below is a small quote from a site named "History World" and this is part of their "History of the Theatre" blurb.
The origins of Greek theatre lie in the revels of the followers of Dionysus, a god of fertility and wine. In keeping with the god's special interests, his cult ceremonies are exciting occasions. His female devotees, in particular, dance themselves into a state of frenzy. Carrying long phallic symbols, known as thyrsoi, they tear to pieces and devour the raw flesh of sacrificial animals. (Note by KFZ: And some say any man foolish enough to be caught in these frenzies.)
But the Dionysians also develop a more structured form of drama. They dance and sing, in choral form, the stories of Greek myth.
In the 6th century BC a priest of Dionysus, by the name of Thespis, introduces a new element which can validly be seen as the birth of theatre. He engages in a dialogue with the chorus. He becomes, in effect, the first actor. Actors in the west, ever since, have been proud to call themselves Thespians.
According to a Greek chronicle of the 3rd century BC, Thespis is also the first winner of a theatrical award. He takes the prize in the first competition for tragedy, held in Athens in 534 BC.
That description is pretty tame. Wild-drunken-violent orgies is what they were. Is there any wonder that low-living is part of thespians' heritage? After Christianity grew to be the West's religion, society looked on the the life-styles of actors with even less admiration. That being said, actors have come by their questionable behavior naturally and it would appear are reverting back to the old days in every expanding ways.

With the help of a very clever chap at the ProBoards forum, I was able to make the "Participation" box larger by default (so that it can show more items). Let me know what you think? Is it too big now? Could be bigger? Just right?

It's not magnified. It's just taller so it shows more items.

I can see that the banner ads use tracking of some kind. They were trying to sell me some astronomy binoculars. I've seen ads for the usual clickbait that attracts the National Enquirer type of rubes. And I saw an ad advertising "Enlist in the Coast Guard Reserve." I clicked on that in hopes of training it away from stupid.

The site has asked me to turned off my ad-blocker. I have not done so, yet. Will see how this develops.
