The kid was hilarious. And he was a trooper, not complaining much at all during about a 5 mile hike. Near the end, Dave carried him on his shoulders and the kid nodded off...really he was in a semi-comatose state by then.

Poor kid. That's close to child abuse! I bet he wanted to be seen as one of the adults, thus he kept going without whining.

It was explained to me that his next oldest sibling was 15, so he was used to spending time with older people. He lives with granny and there is only occasional daycare. One wonders if the great dumbing-down epidemic can be traced to daycare and children not being around adults enough and instead being cast into more of a Lord-of-the-Flies environment.
One kid doesn’t make a case. But I think daycare is a horrible place for children.
Anyway, the kid may become the next Charles Darwin. He was interested in just about everything he saw, as if we had all landed on Mars. He was taking enthusiastic note of this and that with the eyes of the young (and thus he spotted more than one brown frog on the brown forest floor which would have been invisible to anyone else). He also stripped off the bark of a small tree which I then made into a headband.

I consider this a nature photo. In the drive-thru of Burger King I spotted the red-(Commie)-breasted Ignosuckerous Bernius. It’s a species that drives around in luxury Mazdas and hoots nonsense such as “Billionaires should not exist.” Me being in obnoxious mode with my window partially rolled down, I said something loudly like “These idiots don’t probably realize that most of the billionaire kooks like Gates and Zuckerberg are left wing wackos just like they are.” They didn’t hear me. As my brother, who was seated beside me, noted “I’ve got a baseball bat.” That was surely a note that should I be overheard he could defend us. Or was he talking about what he would like to do to the back of that car in the style of Michael Douglas in Falling Down? IdiotCam

Well, I don't know about that. I consider BernieBots very unnatural.
Falling Down was a very interesting movie. Especially the "suicide by cop" ending.

Here’s a single photo (not a stack of them blended together to simulate blur) taken at 1/15 second that does achieve some natural blurring of the water. I braced the camera on a log so that is why the photo is tilted. WaterCam

Here’s another waterfall shot. This is a stack of three photos, each taken about 1 second apart. Frankly, it’s not much different from the first waterfall I did (with a stack of photos) when the photos were taken in “burst” mode (probably 1/10 of a second or less between exposures). But it did work. StackCam

So what kind of mushrooms are those? They certainly don't look very familiar to me, but that's no surprise -- I'm not used to seeing them in the wild.

I've since learned these are referred to as "shell fungus."

So it would seem that the mushrooms in question, whichever species they are, are non-toxic but considered inedible for other reasons. I suppose they'd be useful in an emergency, but there would probably be something better available. You're not going to find them in a desert, after all.

I didn't read the details about the fungi. But if was starving and lost in the forest, any sort of mushroom would be the last thing I would try.

These mushrooms which grow on trees are popular in Asian medicine.
I learned of them as Reishi Mushrooms.

Wow. There are so many health benefits listed for Lingzhi mushrooms that I expected item #31 to be “Un-elects Democrats.” I had no idea that any of these shell mushrooms were okay to eat. We always used to carefully break the big ones off the tree trunk and write on them, usually to mark a certain camping trip or hike. When we were kids, of course. Now I suppose, it’s best to leave them there and let other people enjoy them. Here’s one (of two) that I still have. It’s from 1966 and commemorates a vacation when my parents rented a cabin on Hood Canal at a placed called Happy Hollow. I’m not sure what the drawing is at the bottom. It may represent the canal with the Olympic Mountains in the background.
FungiCamDo you suppose this is still edible?
