My wife's and my 35th wedding anniversary is Monday, March 30th. Since we are practicing "social-distancing, and living in a virtual world, in lieu of the real thing, I think I will give her some of you flower photos.

Here’s another attempt at focus stacking. This dime was composed using four separate shots. I started with a focus on the front rim of the dime and proceeded with the final shot of the back rim of the dime. You can see that there are some blurry parts, especially just past the front edge of the dime. Had I stacked six shots, the results would surely have been better. Larger ViewBut just to gauge what the software is capable of doing in terms of merging different shots, here’s what the first shot looked like and you can see the very narrow depth of field. That is an excellent idea, Mr. Manchu. Let me shoot of few silver dollars and you can throw that in as your gift.

Here’s a Frenchy coin from the archives. I’m sure it’s worth thousands. If not…it’s from France, the land of love and car-burning Muslims. Take the former as the romantic basis for the gift.
Again, this is another extreme macro shot. If you just laid a dime on the table and took a photo of it in good light, you could get the whole thing in focus easily enough. But it wouldn't be a detailed shot like this — which is reduced, even at the larger size, 33% from the original shot...so it really is a yuge macro enlargement.
Larger ImageThis stacked-focus image was compiled using 5 different shots. You can see where I could have used one more in the focal-plane of the “LAGRIFFOUL” text which I think translates as “In free stuff we trust.” I might be wrong about that. What is your translation? May you and Mrs. Flu have many happen returns, although this particular gift is non-returnable, just so you know.

Especially interesting with the dime is the apparent thickness of such a thin coin.
What was the date on the French coin? Of course, they use euros now. In the '60s I accumulated some foreign coins while I was in Greece. They were left behind in the house, I think. There were some German coins and probably French. There were definitely some Central African francs, though I have no idea how or where I got them.

Who knows, I might have had a coin just like it. I believe it would have been worth 4 cents at the time.

Brad, I need that bouquet of virtual flowers for my 35th wedding anniversary! The wine will be real.

Here is some creeping phlox (sounds like something Nancy Pelosi would have in her garden) wending it’s way (creeping?) through some juniper: Larger View

This is a terrible photo. Most of the problem is that there is very little light. It’s late dusk. I’ll try to take a better one tonight using my Nikon instead of my iPhone. But there’s this tree across the street (not sure which kind) that is in bloom. And at dusk it stands out like a flocked christmas tree.

Here’s that same white-dressed tree shot during the day with my Nikon DSLR: Larger ViewIt really does look good at dusk. It seems to be glowing against a dark and monochrome background. Here’s a closer view of the flowers from the above photo: I could certainly go across the street (or use my telephoto…which I might well do) and get a closer shot. But does anyone know what kind of tree this is?

That's a very nice photo, and the phlox earlier was quite good, too. The darker version of the white-flowered tree wasn't so good, as you noticed.

Here’s a shot of the flowers on the tree above using my 200mm zoom lens (at 200mm): Larger ViewI’m hoping Gibbnonymous will swing by and give us the benefit of her horticultural acumen…or at least a good guess.

Those white flowers remind me of the Bradford Pear trees which are abundant in our area.
I just saw the photo of the whole tree. That's no Bradford Pear.

I'm thinking that Gibbnonymous is slacking off and we might have to demote her. With all this isolation time, I was expecting some answers by now. But she could be taking all this very seriously and self-isolating on the moon. There's — what? — a one second delay in communications? That could be it. Gonna take a shot of the Creeping Phlox with the Nikon in a minute and compare results

I think we had Bradford pear trees in our neighborhood, maybe even in our yard. (We had a lot of trees in a sizable yard. Fortunately, we didn't have any disasters from the trees. There were a couple of bad incidents with trees falling, but the damage done was relatively mild. It helped that there was snow on the roof at the time of the worst incident, which cushioned the fall.) I wouldn't know, but Elizabeth was more familiar with trees than I was.
We once visited a neighborhood when they were having a local flowering festival, I think for flowering dogwoods. I think it's safe to say that a number of people here would love to see photos of them, but we had no such capability.

Here’s a shot of the heather. The camera used was my Nikon D3300 mounted on a tripod, remote shutter release, 450 ISO, ƒ/13 (about the sharpest aperture). Normal unsharp mask was applied in Photoshop. So basically all these ingredients add up to “as sharp as this camera/lens is able to produce.” Larger ViewHere’s a full-size (pixel-for-pixel) detail of the heather: Larger View
