He must have been getting up there in years. I don't recall whether or not you were close. In any case, sorry to hear about this.

That's pretty sexy meat right there.

I admit that if I had to chose between a Sacher Torte and that plate of Texas Barbecue on the bottom, I would grab the barbecue and run.

Well, at least regarding the leaner cuts, the beef (in moderation) would probably be better for you than all that sugar.

89, I believe. He had had a stroke about 8 years previously that left him quite debilitated. Recently he went downhill and was in hospice when he died.
At one time (I think during Carter's mismanagement of the economy) during the "energy shortage" (there was never a shortage, of course) he was the top EPA guy on the Left Coast, or at least in the Northwest. He had a large office in one of Seattle's skyscrapers. Perks of the job. Not sure what he actually did in his job. But he ranked up there.

Interesting that you should note this. Late last night, or earlier today, I told my wife that her Greek cookies and Linzer Biscotten, were my favorite cookies.

I recall the scene. One of these is more what I had imagined, although I wasn't exactly sure of the dessert. The name implies a pile of some sort.

I believe there are no coincidences, Dr. Grasshopper. Clearly my unconscious has spoken. I desire to have your wife for...my pastry chef. There. I admit it. I feel butter now. Ooops. A Freudian slip. Damn.

Your photos of the Scheiterhaufen are like some others I saw. Many had what looked like a meringue on top

I had never heard of the dessert, as far as I can recall. But from the name, there had to be a pile of some sort. Haufen means pile. Scheitern means to fail. I may be wrong but I took it that there was a sort of messy or mixed pile of things to make the dessert.

They were enjoying this in the Cafe Museum, a new coffeehouse with a modern, stark interior. Max loves it but Rheinhardt's appraisal is: Clean lines are one thing. But many an artist or architect has gone nearly insane with this style to the point of blandness. I side with Rheinhardt. I don't know the age of this photo, but it looks current. It's the Cafe Museum in Vienna. I agree with Oskar. I want my architecture (at least in a a sweet shop) to be as rich as the offerings.

This would have been around the time that the Jugendstil (Germany and Austria's equivalent of Art Niveau) was at its height. Otto Wagner was the most famous Austrian architect who practiced this style. One can see his work all over Vienna still today. Many of the city's raised tram stations (Stadtbahn) were designed by Wagner. It is too early for Bauhaus philosophy to have been followed. Jugendstil Never underestimate the motive of saving money. The cafe owner could spout off about modernity and avoid extra costs at the same time.

Ha! I guess cost savings could enter into it. But here is where I would want to eat my failed pile: Obviously this is the Central Cafe. But Oskar describes one ornate place they went into that had so many columns that you couldn’t see the back wall in the distance.

You and me both. I would bet Cafe Central has more business than Cafe Museum.

I'm about 65% through Vienna Twilight. And, yes, we're delving into some Freudian sexual stuff.
While not denying for a moment that there can be some bizarre reasons for the things people do, I've never bought the Oedipus complex. It doesn't require a sexual explanation for why there is a natural competition between the husband and the children for the wife's attention. It comes with having children. Children take up a lot of time. Something has to give. Someone's needs are going to be less met, and that's usually the father's needs taking a hit.
One of the main reasons that men and women are delaying marriage (or not getting married at all) is to avoid infringements on their atomized state of personal autonomous liberty. Both marriage and children get in the way of the things people now say (or think) they value most.
But there is certainly the reality of fratricide, or at least sibling rivalry (mostly between brothers). It's related to the phenomenon of the big chick picking on the little chick...and maybe even throwing him out of the nest. Probably most parents understand innately that children need to be protected, and very often from each other.
But there is nothing sexual about this. Freud's universal theories seem to be complete nonsense. But if you look to specific cases then, yes, you will find sexual abuse to be a common element amongst serial killers, for example. And there are all kinds of other perversions or abnormalities. And we probably don't know if most of them were innate or learned...or some combination of the two. But the world is full of very weird people doing very weird stuff. And at the end of the day, I think most of these people are born weird and not made weird.
