I was looking through some old family photos and found this one. I’m sure you realize I’m not exaggerating when I say I have more than a little German blood in my veins. This photos is my Uncle Bruce on my father’s side. He’s a great guy. But you can definitely see the German in this. And I won’t say which German. Or Austrian.

"I'll play the part, and I won't need rehearsin', 'cause all I gotta do is, act naturally." And I won't say which part, but he won't need makeup for the role.

I spent about 5-1/2 hours today moving a roll-top desk my father had restored from basically a pile of scraps about 50 years ago. I think he ran across it by accident while looking around in someone’s barn for something else. It was, from what I remember, barely recognizable as a desk. But he saw something in it and restored it to its glory. They have TV programs now specializing in showing this kind of stuff. This would have made a good episode — as would our attempts today to move the desk out of the house (it’s being sold) to my office. Long story short, we succeeded. But it required minor surgery. We had to amputate one leg in order to get it through a tight space. It was not a perfect solution, but it’s what had to be done if I wanted that desk. After making the move, we delivered it to the office where I cleaned it and applied a very healthy dose of lemon oil. It sucked it right up. I could probably apply some more tomorrow and it would be no worse for wear. It now looks pretty good, if I say so myself. My father was an accomplished amateur craftsman in various disciplines. Basically, if he wanted something done, he’d figure out how to do it. It wasn’t always perfect at first, but that’s how you gain experience and the confidence to try just about anything. Here it is with the roll-top up and then in the down position: Roll-Top CamRoll-Top Closed

That is a beautiful desk. The first thing you need to do is sign a contract on it. Perhaps that will bring good luck and more contracts. I guess endorsing the back of a check to you would be second best.
We have genuine rosewood furniture from Hongkong. As you can imagine, the climate in Texas is much dryer than that in S.E. Asia and I want to start using some type of oil to help maintain the wood. Do you think lemon oil is the best or do you also have some other ideas?

I like that idea, Mr. Flu. And it would be a great place to sit down and write a story (the next Great American Novel)....even if you cheated and used a computer instead of pencil and paper.

I added a question about lemon oil to my post about the desk. I look forward to your reply.

This is what I use, Mr. Flu: Oil CamTo the best of my knowledge, a good lemon oil is safe, it won’t discolor, and it has a cleaning effect as well. Ideally you want to blow off or dust off any dirt and not just rub it in with the lemon oil. But all I did with the desk is generously apply lemon oil to a paper towel (yes….a softer rag would be better) and have at it. If the surface was large enough, I would squirt from the bottle directly onto the surface and then rub it in. Rub with the grain, of course, despite your nature to always going against it.

Here’s the chair my father used with the desk. He has a red cushion on it, which I still have. I just have to find it. It might have had a tie-over part that went on the back of the chair as well. I know I don't have that. The glass on the desk is the original desk pad he used. It does serve the purpose very well of protecting the desk. DeskCamI do have a place for this in my back office. It’s in a sort of storage/utility room at the moment. I’ll probably move it to my office so I can get some use out of it.
The key is missing for the front desk drawer as well as the little drawer on the far top right of the desk. My father used to keep his Colt locked in there. It was one with a removable barrel. It had interchangeable barrels for either 38 or a 45. My mother sold it to a cop who my dad once showed that to and he had long wanted it.
If you roll the top down, it automatically locks itself. And a mechanism also locks the two banks of drawers (left and right) as well. I do have the key for that.

Brad that desk is wonderful. It reminds us of the time when elegance was the norm in everything, even mass produced goods.

Yes. That desk is elegance. I think it’s almost too good for me. But we should aspire for elegance. Before it goes into my office (where I can then fill it up and make it somewhat lived in), my neighbor is going to help me put the leg back on. I think pops, who was usually critical of every damn thing I did, would probably like that his desk is still appreciated. I’m sure I’m not appreciating it right, but I’m willing to meet him in the middle on this.

My father used to be a modest coin collector. He passed on a view of his coins to me including this Roman coin. Can anyone translate the text on the coin? CoinCamiPhone 6s, RAW, Affinity Photo

I believe it reads -- providing spaces where I think it's appropriate and converting V to U (V at some point became the capital and U the uncapitalized version of both U and V, which weren't separated until much later -- the 19th Century in English) -- IMP CAES M AUREL ANTONINUS AUG (with a couple of letters I can't read for sure). The IMP would of course be Imperator, the CAES would be Caesar, the M would probably refer to Marcus, the AUREL would be Aurelius, and the AUG would be Augustus.
I checked coinage for the Antonine emperors (Antoninus Pius, Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus), and found no match. But Marcus's title, at least during his co-imperium with Lucius Verus, was Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Augustus.

I can't improve on Tim's observation.
This is the closest match I can find.
The likeness is old Marcus.

That was close, and could be considered a confirmation, though it isn't identical. I looked on wikipedia, which had several coins but nothing that close.

Thanks for the translation/search. I do think the likeness is the same. It's pretty amazing to hold something like that in your hands. Remember, I'm from the Left Coast. "Old" around these parts is the 1890's.
Timothy, I'll shoot the back when I have a chance and you can have a go at that.

Seeing the reverse could be interesting. The coins shown in the wikipedia articles showed both obverse and reverse sides.
